HELP! I don’t have a skincare routine, where do I even start??
Routine Level: Beginner
My skin type: balanced/ dry in winter
You’ve come to the right place. There’s a LOT of skincare content and products out there, which can feel overwhelming when choosing what products to use for yourself. I’ve spoken to many of you, who’ve been asking me the question above. Let me break this down and help you embark on your skincare journey - how exciting!
Understanding Your Skin Type:
Before diving into products and routines, it's essential to understand your skin type. Is your skin balanced, oily, dry, combination, or sensitive? Take note of any specific concerns you may have. Understanding your skin's needs will help you choose the right products and treatments:
Acne & Blemishes
Ageing/ fine lines/wrinkles
Dehydration
Pores
Dullness
Redness & Irritation
Check out my blog here, which goes into greater detail.
Here is a simple step by step routine:
Cleansing:
Start your AM and PM routine by washing your face with a gentle cleanser suited to your skin type. Cleansing removes dirt, oil, and impurities, preventing clogged pores and breakouts. Look for a cleanser that effectively cleanses without stripping the skin's natural oils. I'd like to introduce the concept of double cleansing, which is part of your PM routine. This is either in a balm/oil format, which first helps take off sunscreen and makeup, before using your cleanser.
How to apply: wet your face and neck, squeeze a small amount onto your fingertips, and gently apply in a circular motion. Leave your cleanser on and brush your teeth for 2 mins. Wash off and gently pat dry with a face cloth.
Toning:
Next up, we have toning. It helps balance your skin's pH levels, tighten pores, and remove any leftover dirt or oil after cleansing. Plus, it hydrates and preps your skin to absorb other products better, like serums and moisturisers. No matter your skin type, there's a toner out there for you. Adding a toner to your routine can leave your skin feeling refreshed and looking its best. After pat drying
How to apply: after pat drying, grab a cotton pad, put 4-5 drops and gently swipe around your face and neck.
Moisturising:
Hydration is key to maintaining healthy skin. Choose a moisturiser formulated for your skin type—whether it's lightweight for oily skin or rich and emollient for dry skin. Moisturising helps to lock in moisture and keep your skin soft and radiant throughout the days.
How to apply: grab a small amount, dot it around your face and slowly massage. Add more until your face is covered, and remember to extend it to the neck.
Sun Protection:
Sunscreen is non-negotiable, even if it's cloudy outside. UV rays can cause damage to your skin, leading to premature aging and increased risk of skin cancer. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher every morning, even on overcast days, and reapply as needed throughout the day.
How to apply: after waiting a few minutes for your moisturiser to set, dot the sunscreen around your face and neck, and gently massage. Add another layer until fully covered and pat in with your fingers to help set it in. I usually apply sunscreen 15 mins before going outdoors.
Actionable next steps:
1. Read this blog on understanding your skin type.
2. Check out the products on the website, and see if any of them are suitable for you. If not, I’d search the brand name and look at further products they offer, or other brands you feel comfortable using.
3. Do a patch test first in a discrete area (e.g.under jaw line) and see how your skin reacts. Wait 24-48 hours - if there’s no reaction then continue using it.
4. Be consistent and use the same routine until you finish all the products. Keep note on how your skin feels as you use each product.
Consistency is essential - apply this routine every morning and evening. Even on busy days, make time for your skincare routine—it's an investment in your skin's health and well-being.
Skincare is a journey, and results may not be immediate. Be patient and give your skin time to adjust to new products and routines. Monitor how your skin responds and adjust your routine as needed. Listen to your skin and pay attention to any signs of irritation or sensitivity.
